Rotenone is not fast acting at exposure levels encountered by humans, it may take years before any effects are noticed. In the case of Parkinson's disease, rotenone is a very potent mitochondrial inhibitor even at levels that are undetectable by many tests. It is the action in the mitochondria that leads to eventual damage from a cumulative effect in the brain neurons, those that produce dopamine. Other chemicals, typically organic solvents such as TCE (trichloroethylene) and MANY others, also impact function of mitochondria and may have a strong synergestic effect with rotenone. There currently are very limited studies looking at these powerful "cocktail" mixtures of rotenone with regards to human health and Parkinson's disease.
